Train Derailment
South Wales
A major incident was declared following a fuel freight train derailment, spillage & subsequent fire at Llangennech, South Wales, on the evening of 26th August 2020. The incident was national news due to the crash’s severity and subsequent fuel release at the crash site.
Approximately 330,000 litres of diesel spilt on the crash site, encompassing a site of international importance containing a site of special scientific Interest, Burry Inlet Special Area of Conservation, Ramser conservation site and on the edge of The Coal Authority’s Morlais Minewater Treatment Works. The emergency clean-up works, which included excavation of fuel-impacted soils, generated approximately 30,000 tonnes of hazardous soils requiring removal from the site. This project details the management, treatment and beneficial reuse of contaminated soils post treatment by BIOGENIE Remediation UK Limited.
- Site investigation & remediation consultation
- Hazardous soil treatment – bioremediation
- Post-treatment beneficial re-use & landfill diversion
Former steel works
Newport, Wales
The Client appointed BIOGENIE UK to design, construct and operate a surface water treatment system to treat contaminated surface water exiting a development site on a former steelworks in Newport, Wales.
The system is designed to operate using multiple phases of treatment as determined by the influent concentrations, with the flexibility to minimise treatment where possible. The system is capable of the following;
- Suspended solids separation
- Oil/water separation
- Coagulation
- Filtration
- Activated carbon adsorption
- Metals precipitation
- Chemical precipitation
- Mixed bed Ion exchange
- pH correction
- Clinoptilolite filtration

Former Muller Dairy Site
Chadwell Heath
We provided a comprehensive end-to-end solution that included removing structures and obstructions, extracting underground storage tanks, remediating landfill materials on site, abstracting and treating contaminated groundwater, and installing a piling mat.
- Earthworks
- Landfill Remediation
- Management of Asbestos Soils
- Tank Removal
- Groundwater Treatment
- Installation of Working Platform
Historical Landfill
Guildford Depot, Surrey
We provided Early Contractor Involvement to assist with the design and enabling works of a former landfill. We then implemented the design, including High-Energy Impact Trials (HEIC), Earthworks, Classification of disposal of unsuitable materials, and installation of a piling platform.
- Early Contractor Involvement
- HEIC Compaction
- Asbestos Management
- Design and Installation of Geotextiles/geogrids
- Waste Classification and Disposal
- Installation of Working Platform

Former Gasworks
Great Dunmow, Essex
The project involved remediating a former gasworks. Works included in-situ stabilisation/solidification, removal of below-ground obstructions, segregation and disposal of asbestos-impacted soils, recovery and disposal of DNAPL, and site-wide reprofiling.
- In-situ Stabilisation/Solidification
- Excavation, Segregation, Offsite recycling
- Implementation of Materials Management Plan (MMP)
- Vacuum Excavation
- DNAPL Removal
- Capping Layer Installation
Former Industrial Area
Gateshead
The site had been used for heavy industry for over 150 years, resulting in wide spread contamination, including hydrocarbons and asbestos. We addressed the asbestos contamination through controlled soil stripping and handpicking, with the hydrocarbon-impacted soils being treated using stabilisation/solidification techniques. As part of our works we also abstracted over 4,000m3 of contaminated water, which was treated using our bespoke water treatment system. Through collaborating with other contractors, we were also able to phase the works in a way that significantly reduced the overall programme.
- Asbestos picking
- Stabilisation/solidification
- Water Treatment
- Collaboration
- On-site Re-use

Former Chemical Works
Mersey Gateway
This site was formerly occupied by chemical works, which resulted in a legacy of significant chlorinated solvent contamination in the underlying shallow aquifer. Halton Borough Council procured remediation works to de-risk the site before constructing the second Mersey crossing, Mersey Gateway.
The project was awarded in two phases. Firstly, BIOGENIE Remediation UK Limited provided pilot-scale trials of various remediation technologies, enabling the Client’s consultants to refine the design. We were then awarded the full-scale works, which focused on recovering chlorinated solvents via multi-phase extraction, flow-path management, and CO2 sparging. This was followed by a phase of in-situ chemical oxidant to address residual dissolved-phase contaminants. The works were completed to programme, enabling the bridge construction to proceed as planned.
- Multi-Phase Extraction
- DNAPL Flowpath Management
- In-Situ Chemical Oxidation
- CO2 Injection

Former Gasworks
Tewkesbury
The project involved remediating a former Gasworks. Works included ecological assessment, services disconnection, building demolition, vacuum excavation, borehole installation, thermally enhanced DNAPL recovery, and in-ground tank filling using foaming concrete.
The works were completed under Full Planning following the submission of a detailed remedial strategy, including a site-specific detailed quantitative groundwater and human health risk assessment.
All works were reviewed and agreed upon with the EA and Local Authority, including verification report sign-off.
- Ecology review
- Service disconnection
- Building demolition
- DNAPL Recovery - Pneumatic pumping
- In void mitigation following DNAPL removal via Foam Concrete pumping
- Enhanced Thermal DNAPL recovery
- Injection Grouting
- HH/CW DQRA
- Full regulatory close out via Planning
Former Engineering Works
Coventry
The project involved the remediation of a former manufacturing site to make it suitable for a retail distribution site. Works included the excavation of contaminated soils in areas of the site together with associated dewatering and water treatment. The site was reprofiled for the redevelopment works, and a piling mat/capping layer was placed in areas of the site. Contaminated soils were treated by stabilisation/solidification techniques and placed below the proposed car park area of the redevelopment. The areas of contaminated soils removed included a former tip area on the site. As a result of the works carried out, associated planning conditions were closed out, and the site was successfully redeveloped.
- Stabilisation / Solidification
- Treatment of Contaminated Waters from Excavations
